No date here - sorry, but you should remember this situation. On our News page you will find details of the way to support the monks and peaceful protestors in Burma. Or to petition go to the link below.

This was posted before October 8th . The march took place (peacefully) despite any ban!
Also under our News tab you will find details of the "banned" Stop War march planned for October 8th. Given our governments apparent willingness to pledge support for peaceful protestors in Burma and posture on the world stage, this is almost unbelievable hypocrisy. To object either link directly from there (link removed) or below.

This one was a bit of a non-starter as the Japanese actually stopped most of these activities in 1998. However as the Japanese whaling fleet continues to hunt many endangered species, the pressure must be kept on! Recently a family member found the most appalling brutality to animals (namely dolphins) by Japanese fishermen shown on a video link. Firstly if you can stomach it watch the video on this link
http://www.glumbert.com/media/dolphin
and then sign the petition on the link below. However it is better not to fall into the trap of blaming the whole Japanese nation in outbursts of racial prejudice like the many blog comments following the video.

Woolworths have agreed to remove these bulbs from their shelves! A victory for common sense! Eliminating inefficient bulbs from the UK would save enough energy to close down two medium-sized power stations. In recent weeks, three retailers - Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's - have all announced they'll stop selling incandescent bulbs earlier than expected. Greenpeace are mounting a campaign to persuade Woolworths to stop stocking them. For the full story go to

Then email head honcho Trevor Bish-Jones, telling him Woolworths needs to shelve power crazy bulbs in 2008. Already done that? Email him again and ask why he hasn't taken any notice of you on the link below.

Well done Oxfam! Over on the Oxfam site you will find several petitions you can sign/emails you can send. The link below is to urge the government to control arms sales to prevent them falling into the wrong hands.

In the news at the moment is Burma please read the following and sign the petition.
There is another article from the Stop War Coalition below that gives another good reason why we should all act now.

Dear friends,

Burma's generals have brought their brutal iron hand down on peaceful monks and protesters -- but in response, a massive global outcry is gathering pace. The roar of global public opinion is being heard in hundreds of protests outside Chinese and Burmese embassies, people round the world wearing the monks' color red, and on the internet-- where our petition has exploded to over 200,000 signers in just 72 hours.

People power can win this. Burma's powerful sponsor China can halt the crackdown, if it believes that its international reputation and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing depend on it. To convince the Chinese government and other key countries, Avaaz is launching a major global and Asian ad campaign on Wednesday, including full page ads in the Financial Times and other newspapers, that will deliver our message and the number of signers. We need 1 million voices to be the global roar that will get China's attention. If every one of us forwards this email to just 20 friends, we'll reach our target in the next 72 hours. Please sign the petition at the link below -if you haven't already- and forward this email to everyone you care about:

The pressure is working - already, there are signs of splits in the Burmese Army, as some soldiers refuse to attack their own people. The brutal top General, Than Shwe, has reportedly moved his family out of the country – he must fear his rule may crumble.

The Burmese people are showing incredible courage in the face of horror. We're broadcasting updates on our effort over the radio into Burma itself – telling the people that growing numbers of us stand with them. Let's do everything we can to help them – we have hours, not days, to do it. Please sign the petition and forward this email to at least 20 friends right now. Scroll down our petition page for details of times and events to join in the massive wave of demonstrations happening around the world at Burmese and Chinese embassies.

With hope and determination,

Ricken, Paul, Pascal, Graziela, Galit, Ben, Milena and the whole Avaaz Team

URGENT - ATTEMPT TO BAN STOP THE WAR MARCH

On Monday 8 October the Stop the War Coalition will be marching
from Trafalgar Square to Parliament calling for all troops in
Iraq to be brought home immediately.

After a series of relatively co-operative meetings, the police
now say they have been instructed not to allow the march to take
place and that all demonstrations are banned within a mile of
Parliament whilst in session.

This is a new development which threatens our democratic rights.
When Gordon Brown became prime minister he promised to liberalise
the laws on protest, saying that one of his principles would be,
"civil liberties safeguarded and enhanced". Government ministers,
including Gordon Brown, have lined up to support the right to
protest in Burma. It is important that these same ministers also
defend the rights of people in this country to protest
peacefully.

We are determined to march to make our views known to parliament
on 8 October, when Gordon Brown will make his long awaited
statement on Iraq. We urge everyone who opposes the war policies
of our government to join the call for all British troops to come
home immediately and to help defend our civil liberties now under
attack. We have produced a petition calling on the authorities to
review the decision to ban the march.

SIGN THE PETITION ONLINEaimed at defending our right to protest
peacefully. You can do this here: http://www.stopwar.org.uk/

DOWNLOAD AND PRINT THE PETITION
Collect as many signatures as you can and send filled petition
sheets to Stop the War Coalition, 27 Britannia Street, WC1X 9JP
Download for printing here: http://www.stopwar.org.uk/

Please spread the word as widely as you can about the
demonstration on Monday 8 October.
